TAKING A STAND – JANUARY 17 – 20, 2012

As all UC students know, we are in the midst of a crisis. Ongoing constraints in the state budget have continually led to drastic cuts which, in turn, have translated into a gradual disinvestment from public higher education in California. Following the 1960 Master Plan, the UC progressed towards excellence as a leader among other institutions by providing quality education for a very affordable price. The motto “Education is a Right, not a Privilege” has resounded throughout the state as the UC paved the way for public higher education. Now, after drastic hikes in student fees and massive reductions in vital resources, the quality and accessibility of public higher education that we took so much pride in is in great jeopardy.

TAKING A STAND will educate and empower the UCR community as to the current budget shortfall and as to how they can make a difference in the struggle against the disinvestment from higher education. Each day of the TAKING A STAND campaign will have a different focus. Not only will we be educating students about the state’s current financial deficit, but we will also be empowering students to take political action. We as student government will be leading the student body in solidarity to voice our concerns to the Regents. We call upon all of you—fellow classmates, our colleagues, and our friends—to stand by me in a fight to have our voices heard. I assure you, there will be no better opportunity than the Regents meeting. We are at a unique stage in this generation. The moves we make today will influence UC students for years to come.

IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT STUDENTS ARE FRUSTRATED ABOUT THE CURRENT SITUATION. IF THAT’S THE CASE…TAKE A STAND.

Next week, Jan. 17-20, during the week of the Regents meeting, ASUCR will be hosting an Advocacy Campaign called TAKING A STAND. This week-long campaign will be focusing on prominent student concerns such as the state’s disinvestment in public higher education, excessive and unnecessary police force, and the privatization of public higher education in California.
