"My design blends UCR pride with a sense of fun and creativity. I wanted to show Scotty in a new light: still strong and adventurous, but also laid-back and whimsical. The hand-drawn style gives it a friendly feel, while the orange beret and tartan shorts highlight his individuality and Highlander spirit. The donkey (basically our unofficial mascot at this point) adds humor, and the avocados and oranges tie the piece to UCR’s citrus roots and agricultural legacy.

I imagined Scotty as a traveler exploring new paths, much like UCR students navigating their own journeys. The fruits spilling from his bag symbolize the lessons and moments we gather (and sometimes lose) along the way. This piece reflects the creativity, humor, and resilience that make UCR so unique and full of spirit."

The first thing that came to mind was books and the library for this art contest. As someone who loves spending time at Orbach and Rivera, I wanted to shine more light on our beautiful, peaceful libraries! I aimed to capture a very soft and cozy environment, similar to the feeling our libraries give us. As a student, I hope my artwork encourages students to embrace the library's peaceful, comforting environment.

"“What we bring to the table”
I had UCR’s three mascots — the donkey, Scotty the Highlander, and Norm the Navel — come together for a picnic like I often do with my friends on AI Knoll! Though all different and unique in their own ways, they all still represent what makes UCR truly UCR: A diverse community where students come together with different experiences, dreams, and contributions. We all bring something to the table! They all don Tartan Soul because ultimately, that’s what unites us all, regardless of where we come from or where we’ll go."

The scene of Scotty looking out into the distance is supposed to be a chill moment away from the stress of exams and schoolwork. I was inspired by cozy genres of media like Studio Ghibli and internet aesthetics like Frutiger Aero. This design aims to combine a soft, clean aesthetic with a touch of cuteness that any highlander can rock.

Using bears to represent our highlander community, I tried to highlight some iconic places around campus such as the botanical garden, the bell tower, and the Rivera arches. I wanted to use the tin cans as a way to show how us, the UCR community, should always listen to each other and acknowledge each other. There are also other motifs in the design such as oranges and a donkey plush, which are both beloved icons of UCR.
